Protein Structure
UniProt Annotation
Function Cooperates with LY96 and CD14 to mediate the innate immune response to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Acts via MYD88, TIRAP and TRAF6, leading to NF-kappa-B activation, cytokine secretion and the inflammatory response. Also involved in LPS- independent inflammatory responses triggered by free fatty acids such as palmitate. {ECO:0000269PubMed:10952994, ECO:0000269PubMed:17478729}.
Subcellular Localization Membrane {ECO:0000250}; Single-pass type I membrane protein {ECO:0000250}.
Disease Associations Note=The protein is encoded by the Lps locus, an important susceptibility locus, influencing the propensity to develop a disseminated Gram-negative infection.
Tissue Specificity Highly expressed in heart, spleen, lung and muscle. Lower levels are found in liver and kidney.
